Blue Laser Light Acne Therapy

"Blue light has been used for the past several years, very effectively, for the treatment of mild to severe inflammatory acne. This is a much safer alternative to the ultraviolet light used in years past because it does not cause cellular damage or promote skin cancer. While a combination approach to treating acne, utilizing topical, oral, and light therapy is best, blue light treatment alone is an option for those who are unable to tolerate antibiotics or those whose skin is very sensitive and cannot tolerate many topical medications. Below is a summary of how blue light works to improve acne."

Matthew B. Dohlman, P.A.-C
Smith Dermatology Clinic

Blue light acne treatment is a non-invasive procedure that uses light in the blue wavelength range of 405-420 nm to kill the Propionobacterium acnes or P. acnes bacteria in skin.

How does it work? The bacteria in acne release porphyrins. These are naturally occurring substances in the body, arising from the breakdown of hemoglobin in red blood cells. When porphyrins absorb light of certain wavelengths, free radical damage is produced, and this destroys the bacteria. Blue light acne treatment uses a narrow-band, high-intensity blue light source that is readily absorbed by porphyrins released by the bacteria causing acne.

Recommended Treatments: Twice per week for 4 weeks (recommendation may vary according to severity of breakout).

There is no cure for acne. Patient may need more Blue Light treatments from time to time to keep breakouts under control. Continue to follow dermatologist's instructions.

Cost: $45 per treatment
